CARMEL – An innovative collaboration between the Putnam Department of Mental Health and the county’s Probation Department will soon be integrating contracted recovery peer advocates into the probation continuum of care.

Commissioner of Mental Health, Social Services and the Youth Bureau Sara Servadio and Probation Director John Osterhout met with members of the Putnam Legislature’s Protective Services Committee Wednesday evening and explained the program’s initiative has been designed to improve outcomes for individuals involved in the justice system who are under both pre-sentencing supervision and post-conviction probation.

“By embedding a Recovery Peer Advocates within the probation process, we aim to provide person centered, recovery-oriented support that addresses behavioral health needs while promoting stability, engagement ad long-term success,” Servadio said.

The commissioner called the collaboration a “shared commitment between the two departments to intervene early by connecting individuals with meaningful support while improving public safety through evidence informed recovery focused practices.”

Committee chairman Tommy Regan praised the initiative that carries no fiscal impact. “Thanks in advance for your partnership. I’m sure people will be assisted by this collaborative effort,” he said.
