Ukrainians protested Thursday against President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to remove Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a senior official widely associated with the country’s successful use of drones in the war with Russia.

Fedorov was regarded as an innovative figure within Ukraine’s defense establishment, particularly for his role in expanding battlefield technology and unmanned systems. His approach, however, reportedly brought him into conflict with more traditional elements of the military command, according to the Associated Press.

The dismissal prompted public opposition as demonstrators gathered to criticize Zelensky’s decision and defend a minister viewed by supporters as central to Ukraine’s adaptation to modern warfare.

Zelensky said Fedorov had clashed with Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukraine’s armed forces.

During a news conference, the president indicated that the dispute between the two senior officials had become unsustainable.

Zelensky said that if Fedorov and Syrskyi could not resolve their disagreements, he would resolve the matter himself.

The removal came during a broader government reshuffle that also included the replacement of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

Svyrydenko had served as prime minister for only one year before Zelensky moved to replace her.

The simultaneous changes to Ukraine’s civilian government and defense leadership have intensified scrutiny of Zelensky’s management of the country as the war continues.

Fedorov’s departure is particularly significant because of his association with Ukraine’s drone operations, which have become an important part of its military strategy.

Ukraine has relied heavily on unmanned aircraft for surveillance, battlefield strikes and attacks against military targets, making technological innovation increasingly important as the conflict has continued.

Supporters of Fedorov viewed him as a leader willing to challenge established military practices and accelerate the use of newer systems.

His reported disagreements with Syrskyi highlighted a broader tension between officials pushing technological change and a conventional military hierarchy responsible for directing the armed forces.

Zelensky’s decision demonstrated that he sided with restructuring the leadership rather than allowing the conflict between the defense minister and armed forces commander to continue.

The protests showed that the move was not universally accepted and that Fedorov retained public support among Ukrainians who credited him with strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.

The government changes come as Ukraine remains under sustained military pressure and depends on coordination among political leaders, defense officials and battlefield commanders.

Replacing both the prime minister and defense minister in the same week represents a major shift within Zelensky’s administration.

The immediate effect of the reshuffle will depend on who assumes control of the Defense Ministry and whether the new leadership continues the technological programs associated with Fedorov.

For protesters, the concern centers on the removal of an official they believe contributed directly to Ukraine’s military effectiveness.

For Zelensky, the decision reflects an effort to end internal disputes at the highest levels of the defense establishment and impose a clearer chain of authority as the war continues.
