COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster announced Monday that Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, will be appointed to fill the Senate vacancy created by Graham’s death.

The announcement can be viewed through the video feed.

McMaster scheduled a 4 p.m. news conference at his office in the South Carolina Statehouse to reflect on Graham’s life and service and formally announce the appointment.

The governor’s office said the event would serve to “reflect on the life and service of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and announce an appointment to fill the vacancy created by the senator’s passing.”

Graham died suddenly Saturday at age 71.

President Donald Trump said before the announcement that he had recommended Nordone to McMaster as a temporary replacement for her brother.

“I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”

Nordone’s appointment places a member of Graham’s immediate family in the seat he held for more than two decades.

Graham entered the Senate in 2003 after previously serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. He became one of the Republican Party’s most prominent voices on foreign policy, national security and military affairs.

The District of Columbia medical examiner released preliminary findings Sunday identifying the cause of Graham’s death.

“The preliminary examination findings were: Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease,” Graham’s office said.

An aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta, allowing blood to move between layers of the artery wall. The condition can develop suddenly and become fatal.

McMaster’s announcement follows several days of tributes to Graham from political leaders and colleagues following his death.

The governor’s office said the press conference would address both Graham’s public service and the process of filling the vacant Senate seat.
