Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has released a photo of himself from the hospital while providing a detailed update on his health following a recent fall that prompted weeks of speculation about his condition.
In a statement, the Kentucky Republican sought to reassure constituents and colleagues that he did not suffer any major injuries after the incident. McConnell said extensive medical evaluations found no broken bones, concussion, stroke, heart attack, tumors, or internal bleeding. However, he revealed that he briefly lost consciousness and was hospitalized, where doctors also diagnosed him with a mild case of pneumonia.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital,” McConnell said. “While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”
The 84-year-old senator expressed gratitude to the medical team overseeing his treatment and said he has been following his doctors’ recommendations throughout his recovery.
“I can assure you that I’ve been a good patient,” McConnell said. “At my age, I tend to do what my doctors tell me to do. I’ve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident.”
McConnell added that his condition has steadily improved in recent weeks, allowing him to transition from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility, where he is continuing physical therapy and working to regain his strength.
“And I’m continuing to do everything they ask to speed my recovery,” he said. “In fact, with signs of continued progress, I’ve been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where I’ll keep regaining my strength.”
Despite being away from Capitol Hill, McConnell emphasized that he has remained actively involved in Senate business. He said he has stayed in regular contact with fellow lawmakers and staff regarding key legislative matters, including federal appropriations, upcoming midterm elections, and other pressing issues facing Congress.
McConnell also reflected on his decision to retire at the end of his current Senate term in January, saying it was made after carefully considering the physical demands of serving in the Senate. While acknowledging the challenges that come with age, he stressed that he remains committed to fulfilling his responsibilities until the end of his term.
“You’re right to expect your representatives to work hard for you,” McConnell said. “Part of my decision to retire at the end of my term this coming January was being honest about the demands of Senate work. But I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.”
McConnell’s statement comes after weeks of intense public interest surrounding his health. According to CNN, questions had mounted as aides to the veteran senator were highly protective of information regarding his medical condition, leading to widespread speculation about his recovery and future in public office.
The health update also arrives during a difficult period for Senate Republicans. Just one day earlier, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina reportedly died following a sudden illness, marking a significant loss for the Republican conference and adding to concerns about the health of several longtime members of Congress.
As McConnell continues his rehabilitation, his statement signals that he intends to remain engaged in legislative work while focusing on his recovery. The veteran lawmaker expressed optimism about his progress and reiterated his commitment to serving the people of Kentucky until his retirement becomes official.
