A senior official in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration reportedly scheduled an official meeting with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations before the U.S. State Department intervened and the meeting was canceled.
Ana María Archila, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, had arranged a July 7 meeting with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, according to calendar invitation screenshots reviewed by City Journal and confirmed by multiple sources, including a State Department official.
The meeting was scheduled for 11 a.m. at 2 United Nations Plaza. Two other senior officials from the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs were also listed as attendees, according to the report.
City Journal reported that the State Department had not been informed in advance. The meeting was canceled after federal officials met with the Mamdani administration to “clarify acceptable conduct.”
Archila reportedly did not notify Mamdani that she had scheduled the meeting. She was later reprimanded and instructed to cancel it, according to the report.
A spokesperson for the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs said the meeting would not occur.
“This meeting did not and will not take place,” the spokesperson said.
The reported meeting drew attention after a related post circulated online.
Archila, a longtime activist and co-director of the Working Families Party, was appointed to lead the city’s international affairs office under Mamdani. The office manages relationships between New York City and foreign governments, consulates, the United Nations community and other international partners.
City Journal also reported that the office had previously circulated an internal directive telling staff to prioritize diplomatic engagement with foreign officials who are “in political alignment/leftist.”
The attempted meeting raised questions over the role of local officials in contacts with foreign representatives, particularly when the federal government has not been notified. Foreign policy is handled at the federal level, while city international affairs offices generally focus on municipal coordination, diplomatic services and local engagement with foreign missions.
Iran is designated by the United States as a state sponsor of terrorism. The scheduled meeting with Iravani was canceled before it took place after State Department involvement.
