CARMEL – Less than a week after the fully restored Sybil Ludington statue was returned to its prominent spot on Carmel’s main thoroughfare overlooking Lake Gleneida, vandals damaged the base of the historic monument.

Putnam Sheriff’s Department members responded to the statue around noon Wednesday after a report of criminal mischief.

Sheriff Brian Hess said after investigators observed damage to the base of the monument an investigation was initiated.

Hess said detectives have not determined whether the incident is related to the recent criminal mischief investigation involving the historic Putnam County Courthouse and the Declaration of Independence replica.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area of the statue or who has information related to the incident is asked to contact the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (845) 225-4300.
