Russian overnight attacks killed three people across Ukraine on Wednesday, including a woman in Kyiv, where residents heard powerful explosions for the second night in a row before an air raid alert was issued.

The explosions in the capital began shortly after midnight. The timing was unusual because Ukrainian air raid warnings typically come before incoming strikes, giving civilians a chance to move to shelter.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city administration, said one woman was killed and two other people were injured in the capital.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said the attack damaged administrative buildings, warehouses, a garage complex and several city trams.

The deadliest overnight strikes were reported in Kharkiv, where Mayor Ihor Terekhov said two people were killed and 20 others were injured.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 169 long-range strike drones and seven missiles overnight, including five ballistic missiles. Ukrainian defenses shot down or jammed 139 drones, while two anti-radar missiles failed to reach their targets, according to the Air Force.

All five ballistic missiles and 20 drones hit targets at 15 locations, the Air Force said, a result that underscored the continuing pressure on Ukraine’s air defense network.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian guided bombs injured an elderly man and a woman overnight, regional head Ivan Fedorov said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces carried out an overnight strike on arms industry facilities in Kyiv. The ministry said the targets included a plant producing components for Flamingo cruise missiles and a site assembling mid- and long-range drones.

Moscow also reported a large wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory. Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses downed 415 Ukrainian drones from late Tuesday into early Wednesday.

Saratov Gov. Roman Busargin said a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person, injured several others and damaged unspecified industrial facilities.

In Nizhnekamsk, Mayor Radmir Belyayev said Ukrainian drones damaged industrial facilities and injured several people. He did not identify the facilities that were struck.

Yuri Slyusar, governor of Russia’s Rostov region, said Ukrainian drones hit and damaged two oil tankers in Taganrog Bay, injuring two crew members. The crew of one vessel had to be evacuated.

Slyusar said there was no oil spill because the tankers, which were heading to the port of Rostov-on-Don, were empty.
