Cristiano Ronaldo brought the curtain down on his remarkable World Cup career following Portugal’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, ending an era for one of football’s greatest players. The emotional loss marked Ronaldo’s sixth and final appearance at the FIFA World Cup, closing a chapter that spanned more than two decades of international competition.
Portugal’s hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals were shattered in dramatic fashion when Spain’s Mikel Merino scored a stoppage-time winner, leaving Portuguese players devastated and Ronaldo visibly emotional as the final whistle sounded.
Tears filled the eyes of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as he walked off the pitch, knowing he had played his final match on football’s biggest stage. Although disappointed by the result, Ronaldo remained proud of everything he had accomplished while representing Portugal and insisted he leaves the tournament with no regrets.
Speaking after the match through an interpreter, Ronaldo acknowledged the pain of the defeat but emphasized that he had given everything he could throughout his international career.
“Well, it’s normal, sad, to leave the World Cup like this,” Ronaldo said. “But, as I said yesterday at the press conference, I gave it my all, I gave my best. And I leave with a clear conscience.”
The Portuguese captain reflected on the unpredictable nature of football, accepting that victory and defeat are both part of an athlete’s journey.
“That’s football, that’s the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. And it has to move on. It was my last World Cup, yes, but the rest … I have time to think, be with my family, not make decisions in the heat of the moment and move on with life.”
Ronaldo leaves the World Cup without achieving one of the few honors missing from his extraordinary career. Despite winning numerous league championships, domestic cups, UEFA Champions League titles, and individual awards, the coveted World Cup trophy remained out of reach.
Portugal never reached a World Cup final during Ronaldo’s career. The nation’s best finish with him came in 2006, when Portugal advanced to the semifinals before ultimately placing fourth. Although later World Cup campaigns featured memorable performances, the team was unable to return to the tournament’s final four.
Even without lifting the World Cup, Ronaldo leaves behind an exceptional legacy on football’s biggest stage.
Across six World Cup tournaments, he scored 11 goals in 27 appearances, making him one of the competition’s most accomplished players. His longevity also placed him in elite company, as he became one of only two men in history—alongside Argentina superstar Lionel Messi—to compete in six different FIFA World Cups.
The achievement highlights Ronaldo’s remarkable consistency, fitness, and ability to remain among the world’s elite players across multiple generations of international football.
While the World Cup title eluded him, Ronaldo enjoyed tremendous success in the UEFA European Championship, where he played a pivotal role in Portugal’s rise as a major football power.
Over the course of his European Championship career, Ronaldo scored 14 goals in 30 matches and helped guide Portugal to its first major international trophy by winning the 2016 UEFA European Championship.
For Ronaldo, that historic triumph remains one of the defining moments of his career and holds a place in his heart comparable to winning the World Cup.
“Before Cristiano, Portugal hadn’t won any titles,” he said. “So, I’m happy. The truth is that the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016, which for me has the same significance as the World Cup, honestly.”
He added that despite the disappointment of Portugal’s elimination, he remains satisfied knowing he gave everything possible for his country.
“Therefore, I repeat, I leave with a clear conscience, having done my best, and that’s it. Tomorrow will be a new day, and life goes on.”
Throughout his international career, Ronaldo became Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and one of the nation’s most influential sporting figures. His leadership, goal-scoring ability, and relentless pursuit of excellence helped elevate Portuguese football to unprecedented heights and inspired a new generation of players.
Beyond his achievements with the national team, Ronaldo has enjoyed one of the most decorated club careers in football history, winning championships in England, Spain, and Italy before continuing his career in Saudi Arabia.
The veteran forward remains under contract with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League for one more season. While speculation continues about whether the upcoming campaign will be the final chapter of his professional playing career, Ronaldo has not yet confirmed when he plans to retire from club football.
For now, the focus shifts from international competition to the next stage of his career, one that will likely include reflection on an extraordinary legacy.
Although his World Cup journey has come to an end without the trophy he long sought, Ronaldo’s impact on the game extends far beyond titles. His longevity, consistency, record-breaking achievements, and influence on football around the world have secured his place among the sport’s greatest icons.
As Portugal begins preparing for the future without its longtime captain, Ronaldo departs the World Cup stage as one of the most recognizable and accomplished players the tournament has ever seen, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
