Two explosions struck central Damascus on Tuesday near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during an official visit to Syria, according to state media.

Macron was unharmed at the time of the blasts. He was reportedly at the Syrian Presidential Palace for a scheduled meeting with his Syrian counterpart when the explosions occurred.

Syria’s state-run Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that at least 18 people were injured in the two separate explosions. One blast occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel in the heart of Damascus, while another was reported close to the Ministry of Tourism.

According to Syria’s Interior Ministry, the explosion near Macron’s hotel took place outside the designated security perimeter for the French president’s residence.

SANA reported that both devices were rudimentary explosive devices. The first was reportedly placed inside a vehicle parked along the roadside, while the second was hidden inside a garbage container.

The incident comes just days after another explosion in Damascus caused panic and tremors in parts of the capital last week.
