WHITE PLAINS – A former postal service letter carrier assigned to Mount Vernon has been sentenced to three and 1/3 years in federal prison for abusing her position to steal checks, credit cards, financial mail, and personal identifying information from victims on her mail route. She used the stolen mail and information to commit fraud and aggravated identity theft.

It was alleged that from December 2022 through May 23, 2024, Tameka Babulal, also known as Tameka Williams, Sharniece Williams and Meek Williams, conspired with others in a scheme to possess, steal, and misuse mail stolen from the postal service in Mount Vernon.

She kept the stolen items at her Hempstead home she shared with her husband and co-conspirator and co-conspirator Joel Babulal.

Her victims included elderly people in their 90s, young adults in their early 20s, business owners, churchgoers, military personnel, and other everyday people.

Babulal’s credit card scheme involved at least close to $41,000 in fraudulent transactions using stolen credit cards. Her check fraud scheme involved over $78,700 in checks and money orders, and over $15,000 in fraudulent transactions using stolen checks.
