Russia has accused Ukraine of refusing a proposed temporary ceasefire that Moscow says was intended to allow the recovery and handover of the bodies of fallen Ukrainian soldiers in the embattled eastern town of Kostiantynivka, adding another point of contention to the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, Ukrainian forces declined to halt shelling in and around Kostiantynivka, preventing what Moscow described as a humanitarian operation to return the remains of Ukrainian servicemen. Russian officials said the proposed ceasefire would have lasted for six hours and was intended solely to facilitate the safe transfer of the bodies from the battlefield.
The announcement comes amid continued fighting over Kostiantynivka, a strategically significant town in Ukraine’s Donetsk region that has become one of the latest flashpoints in the war. The area has witnessed intense combat in recent weeks as Russian forces continue their offensive in eastern Ukraine.
Russian military commanders informed President Vladimir Putin on Friday that Russian troops had captured Kostiantynivka after prolonged fighting. However, Ukrainian authorities quickly rejected that claim, insisting that their forces remain in control of the town and continue to defend their positions against Russian attacks.
The conflicting statements reflect the difficulty of independently verifying developments on the battlefield, where both sides frequently issue competing accounts of territorial gains and military operations.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had formally proposed the localized ceasefire for Monday and gave Ukrainian authorities until 9:00 a.m. GMT on Sunday to respond. Moscow maintains that the temporary pause in hostilities was designed exclusively for humanitarian purposes, allowing the bodies of deceased Ukrainian soldiers to be safely transferred to Ukrainian officials.
As of Sunday, Ukraine’s Defence Ministry and General Staff had not publicly responded to Russia’s allegations or confirmed whether such a proposal had been received. Ukrainian officials have also not commented on Moscow’s claims regarding the proposed ceasefire or the status of the planned handover.
Kostiantynivka has long been viewed as a key objective in Russia’s military campaign in eastern Ukraine. Control of the town would strengthen Moscow’s position in the Donetsk region and potentially provide greater access to surrounding strategic areas. For Ukraine, maintaining control of the town remains vital to slowing Russia’s advance and preserving defensive positions in the east.
The latest disagreement underscores the continuing challenges surrounding humanitarian efforts during the conflict. While both Russia and Ukraine have previously exchanged prisoners of war and returned the bodies of fallen soldiers through negotiated agreements, such operations often require temporary pauses in fighting and coordination between both sides.
With hostilities continuing across eastern Ukraine, prospects for localized humanitarian arrangements remain uncertain. The dispute over Kostiantynivka highlights not only the fierce military struggle for control of the region but also the broader difficulties in carrying out humanitarian missions amid ongoing combat.
As the war enters another critical phase, the situation in eastern Ukraine continues to evolve rapidly, with competing battlefield claims and limited independent verification making it difficult to establish the full picture of events on the ground.
