A new YouGov survey found that Democratic respondents gave slightly higher favorability marks to the Black Lives Matter flag than to the American flag, while Republicans reported overwhelmingly different views of the same symbols.
The YouGov poll, conducted online from June 30 to July 2, surveyed 1,088 adults ages 18 and older about their views of several flags and political symbols.
According to Mediaite’s report on the results, 74% of Democrats said they had a very positive or somewhat positive view of the Black Lives Matter flag. By comparison, 72% of Democrats said they had a very positive or somewhat positive view of the Stars and Stripes.
The survey also found Democrats were twice as likely to express a negative or somewhat negative view of the American flag as they were of the Black Lives Matter flag. Ten percent of Democrats reported a negative or somewhat negative view of the U.S. flag, compared with 5% who said the same of the BLM flag.
Republicans responded very differently to the Black Lives Matter flag. According to the submitted results, 10% of GOP voters said they had a very positive or somewhat positive view of it.
The poll also measured reactions to a “Donald Trump” flag, which the submitted material said presumably refers to flags featuring the president’s image or messages connected to his Make America Great Again movement.
Among Democrats, Trump flags received the lowest favorable rating of the symbols cited in the submitted material. YouGov found that 3% of Democrats had a very positive or somewhat positive view of Trump flags, while 88% had a very negative or somewhat negative view.
Democrats were more likely to express positive views of the Confederate flag than of Trump flags, according to the submitted results. Nine percent of Democrats said they had a positive or somewhat positive reaction to the Confederate flag, three times the share who said the same about Trump flags.
The poll also found that 27% of Democratic respondents had a positive view of the Palestinian flag, making them nine times more likely to view it favorably than a Trump flag, according to the submitted material.
The YouGov findings were released shortly after a Marist poll found that fewer than half of Democrats said they were proud to be Americans. The submitted material said Republicans were more than twice as likely to express pride in being American, with 93% of Republican respondents saying they were proud Americans.
The Marist poll came just days before the United States marked its 250th birthday and as the Democratic Party faced internal political shifts following recent primary victories by several socialist candidates, according to the submitted material.
Other polling cited in the submitted information showed a similar partisan divide on national pride. A 2025 Gallup poll placed the gap at 92% among Republicans and 36% among Democrats. Gallup also found Democratic pride had declined from 62% the previous year, when Joe Biden was in the White House, while Republican pride was 85% in 2024.
The YouGov results add another data point to polling showing sharp partisan differences in how Americans view national and political symbols, including the U.S. flag, the Black Lives Matter flag, Trump flags, the Confederate flag and the Palestinian flag.
