NELSONVILLE –Officials in Nelsonville recall the village’s vulnerability to flooding from the Foundry Brook and Back Brook watersheds.
Putnam’s smallest municipality is partnering with the Village of Cold Spring and Town of Philipstown with an engineering firm after receiving a grant from the Hudson River Estuary Program to examine risks and identify steps the town and villages can take to prevent future calamities.
Three years ago, widespread flooding from monsoon rains carved a 300-foot-long trench through the village, severely damaging several residential streets.
Nelsonville Mayor Chris Winward also noted that the village was working in conjunction with Putnam County on a countywide hazard mitigation plan.
Village officials are also focused on traffic along Route 301, prompting the board to ask the New York State DOT to install a crosswalk on the busy road.
A pedestrian traffic count conducted earlier this month is required for the state to determine whether to approve a crosswalk.
