Police in New York City said on Thursday that a man died after suffering severe burns near the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, and activists from the Tibetan exile community identified him as a Tibetan man who reportedly set himself on fire in a political appeal for independence.
The New York City Police Department said officers responded to an emergency call at about 6:30 p.m. local time and found the man in critical condition with severe burn injuries near the UN complex. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released his identity, and police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Voice of Tibet, a media outlet associated with the Tibetan exile community, identified the deceased as Logba Rangzen. The outlet reported that he carried out the act outside the United Nations headquarters while issuing a public appeal calling for Tibetan independence and unity.
According to the same report, Rangzen was an Uber driver and had arrived at the location carrying a Tibetan flag. A fellow driver who knew him through community gatherings told local media that he had expressed deep frustration over Chinese government policies affecting Tibetans and had been increasingly outspoken about the issue.
The incident comes amid continued international attention on China’s governance of Tibet and its policies toward ethnic minorities. Tibetans in exile and advocacy groups have long criticized Beijing’s rule, while Chinese officials maintain that their policies promote stability, economic development, and national unity.
Police have not confirmed the identity of the deceased or provided additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the case remains under active investigation.
