COLD SPRING – The Village of Cold Spring is known as Putnam County’s tourist capital.
Each weekend, thousands of out-of-towners converge on the small municipality to dine, shop, and view the village’s scenery overlooking the Hudson River.
The increase in visitors over the years has raised concerns about vehicle and pedestrian traffic. In response, and thanks to the efforts of the Cold Spring Village Board, the State Department of Transportation will install solar-powered, rapid-flashing signs at four pedestrian crossings: Route 301 at Locust Ridge; Fishkill Avenue/Academy Street and Route 301; Craigside Drive and Route 9D; and Route 9D between the Haldane School parking lot and the school’s tennis courts.
Mayor Kathleen Foley said pavement striping at the crossings will also be improved later this year at a cost of $80,000, with the school district contributing up to 50 percent.
Village and school officials have also agreed to hire a crossing guard outside the Haldane School campus. The district will cover the guard’s $15,000 salary, and the guard will be a village employee supervised by the Cold Spring Police Department.
