The U.S. Treasury has announced the investment lineup for the newly created Trump Accounts, a savings and investment initiative designed to help children begin building wealth from birth through long-term investments in the stock market.
Under the program, every eligible child born between 2025 and 2028 with a valid Social Security number will automatically receive a $1,000 federal contribution to kick-start an investment account. The initiative is intended to encourage long-term saving and investing from an early age while giving families an opportunity to build financial security over time.
At the launch of the program, all government contributions will be invested by default in the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM). Treasury officials said the fund will serve as the primary investment option during the program’s initial rollout because of its broad exposure to the U.S. stock market through companies included in the S&P 500 Index.
In addition to the default investment, the Treasury has approved several other low-cost exchange-traded funds (ETFs) from some of the world’s largest asset managers. These include the BlackRock iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), the BlackRock iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF (ITOT), the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 1500 Composite Stock Market ETF (SPTM), and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI).
The selected funds provide investors with diversified exposure to hundreds or even thousands of publicly traded U.S. companies, allowing account balances to grow alongside the broader stock market over the long term. Treasury officials said the lineup was chosen to give participants access to widely recognized, diversified investment products with relatively low management costs.
BlackRock Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Larry Fink said the program could significantly improve financial outcomes for future generations by encouraging investing at an early age.
“By giving younger Americans the opportunity to start investing earlier, Trump Accounts can help millions build long-term financial security,” Fink said.
The program has also attracted support from private-sector employers and investment firms. Several companies, including BlackRock, announced plans to match the federal government’s $1,000 contribution for the children of their employees, effectively doubling the initial investment for eligible families.
Supporters of the initiative say starting investments at birth allows children to benefit from decades of compound growth, potentially resulting in substantially larger account balances by adulthood. Even relatively modest contributions made early in life can grow significantly over time when invested in diversified stock market funds.
The Trump Accounts program represents one of the federal government’s newest efforts to encourage personal investing and long-term wealth creation. By combining government seed funding with potential employer matching and future family contributions, the initiative aims to provide millions of children with an early financial foundation that could support future education expenses, homeownership, retirement savings, or other long-term financial goals.
Treasury officials said additional guidance regarding account administration, eligibility requirements, and enrollment procedures will be released as the program moves toward full implementation. The initiative is expected to begin serving eligible children born during the 2025–2028 enrollment period, with participating investment firms managing the approved ETF options selected by the Treasury.
