Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Wednesday that Russia is preparing a major strike against Ukraine and urged civilians across the country to take shelter.
Zelensky issued the warning during a press conference with the prime minister of Ireland and said he planned to return to Ukraine on Wednesday evening.
“Today, I ask our people in Ukraine to be especially careful – stay safe and protect your families and children – be sure to take shelter and pay attention to air-raid alerts in Ukraine,” Zelensky said. “We know that Putin has been preparing a massive strike against Ukraine for some time. That is exactly the threat we are facing tonight.”
Zelensky did not provide details on the expected targets or the type of weapons Russia may use. Russian forces have frequently used drones and missiles to strike critical infrastructure and other sites behind Ukraine’s front lines.
The warning comes as the war, which began in 2022, continues with limited movement along much of the front in recent months. Heavy fighting has continued in eastern Ukraine, including near the strategic cities of Kupyansk, Lyman and Kostiantynivka.
Zelensky’s message urged Ukrainians to remain alert and follow air-raid warnings as officials prepare for the possibility of a widespread Russian attack overnight.
