Tensions are already running high ahead of the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup knockout-stage showdown between Ecuador and Mexico after Ecuador’s Football Federation accused Mexican supporters of attempting to disrupt the team’s preparations with an overnight disturbance outside its hotel.
According to reports, an estimated 1,000 Mexican fans gathered late Monday night outside the hotel where Ecuador’s national team is staying in Santa Fe, near Mexico City. The large crowd reportedly played loud music, chanted continuously, and created an atmosphere intended to keep Ecuador’s players awake ahead of Tuesday’s crucial match.
The gathering continued for several hours, with supporters cheering, singing, and making as much noise as possible in what many viewed as an effort to deprive the Ecuadorian squad of a restful night’s sleep before one of its biggest matches of the tournament.
The incident prompted an immediate response from Ecuador’s Football Federation (FEF), which filed an official complaint with FIFA World Cup organizers on Tuesday, arguing that the actions violated the spirit of fair competition and sportsmanship that the tournament is meant to promote.
In a statement, the federation condemned the overnight disturbance, saying the behavior was inconsistent with the values of respect and fair play that should define the world’s biggest football competition.
“This conduct is far removed from the principles of fair play, equality, and unity that a FIFA World Cup should represent,” the FEF said.
The federation also urged tournament organizers and local authorities to strengthen security measures around the Ecuadorian delegation, calling for greater protection of the team’s players, coaching staff, and supporters to ensure they can participate in the tournament under fair conditions.
Despite expressing disappointment over the incident, Ecuador made it clear that it intends to let its performance on the field provide the ultimate response.
“We trust that these unsporting acts will not tarnish the football celebration that unites two brotherly countries,” the federation said. “Ecuador will always respond on the pitch.”
The complaint has added another layer of drama to what is already one of the most anticipated knockout matches of the World Cup. With a place in the next round at stake, emotions are expected to be high as both teams battle for survival in the tournament.
Mexico will host Ecuador at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Tuesday in a match expected to draw significant attention from football fans around the world. Whether FIFA will take any disciplinary action regarding the overnight incident remains unclear, but the controversy has already intensified the rivalry before a ball has even been kicked.
