WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is calling on gasoline retailers across the country to lower prices immediately, arguing that falling oil prices should already be reflected at the pump.

In a post on social media Sunday evening, Trump pointed to the declining price of crude oil, which he said had fallen to approximately $68 per barrel and was continuing to trend lower. He urged gas station operators to pass those savings on to American consumers without delay.

“Gasoline Retailers must get their Prices down, IMMEDIATELY!” Trump wrote. “They’re too high considering that Oil is now at $68 a Barrel, and heading south.”

The president warned retailers against what he described as price gouging, saying businesses that fail to lower prices could face consequences.

“There will be no gouging, which is totally illegal,” Trump said. “If Retailers don’t do this, big problems lie ahead!”

Targeting $2.50 Per Gallon

Trump said he believes gasoline prices should move toward the $2.50 per gallon range, a level he argues would provide much-needed financial relief to American families struggling with the cost of living.

Lower fuel prices would have a ripple effect throughout the economy. Since gasoline and diesel fuel are essential to transporting food, consumer goods, and raw materials, lower energy costs can reduce shipping expenses and help ease prices on everyday products.

For millions of Americans who commute to work or operate small businesses, lower prices at the pump could also mean more disposable income and reduced monthly expenses.

California Taxes Draw Criticism

The president also singled out California, criticizing the state’s fuel taxes and regulations that contribute to some of the nation’s highest gasoline prices.

“California should stop charging such heavy Taxes on their Gasoline,” Trump wrote.

He argued that government taxes and regulations are inflating fuel costs for California residents, adding that in some cases taxes could eventually exceed the cost of the gasoline itself.

“Soon the Tax will be higher than the Product itself,” Trump said.

California’s gasoline prices have historically remained well above the national average due to a combination of state excise taxes, environmental regulations, emissions standards, and fuel formulation requirements unique to the state.

Energy Costs Remain a Key Economic Issue

Fuel prices have remained one of the most closely watched economic indicators for American families. While crude oil prices fluctuate daily on global markets, retail gasoline prices often take additional time to adjust because of refining costs, transportation expenses, inventory already purchased at higher prices, and regional tax differences.

Trump has consistently argued that increasing American energy production and reducing government regulations would help keep fuel prices lower over the long term.

As Americans prepare for the busy summer travel season, the president’s comments signal that his administration intends to keep pressure on the energy industry to ensure consumers benefit as wholesale oil prices continue to decline.
