GARRISON – Five people were injured after their car swerved to avoid a falling tree and struck a guardrail on Route 9 in Garrison.

Authorities said the falling timber pulled down live power lines and a utility pole directly onto the vehicle.

Calls to the 9-1-1 Center in Carmel late Sunday afternoon sent members of the Putnam Sheriff’s Department, State Police, Garrison and Continental Village Fire Departments, EMS from the Garrison and Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, paramedics from the Empress Ambulance Company and crews from Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company to Route 9 between South Mountain Pass and Winston Lane.

Emergency crews evaluated the car’s occupants and took them to area hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Police aided by fire police from the two departments and the Putnam County Fire Police team closed Route 9 in both directions for hours.

Due to the extensive damage to the utility infrastructure, Route 9 remained closed until 4 p.m. Monday.
