President Donald Trump said the growing popularity of socialist candidates, including those aligned with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, represents a major danger to the country.

President Donald Trump said Monday that the rise of socialist candidates in major cities poses what he called the “biggest threat” to the United States.
Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a series of primary victories by candidates aligned with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a socialist whose political network scored several wins last week.
“They use the word social democrat because it sounds so nice, but it’s really communism you’re talking about,” Trump said. “I think it’s the biggest threat to our nation there is, maybe since our founding. That includes World War I, World War II, September 11, it includes the Pearl Harbor attack.”
The comments came after Mamdani-backed candidates won multiple primaries for congressional districts in New York, including races against two incumbents.
Trump has repeatedly warned that candidates running under the democratic socialist label are advancing communist policies. He has argued that communism is “very easy to sell” because its supporters promise voters benefits and services for “free.”
The president’s remarks also followed a recent vote by a New York City housing board to freeze rent for about one million rent-controlled apartments. The freeze applies to tenants with one-year or two-year leases for a period of two years.
Trump has used that and other policies to argue that socialist candidates are gaining influence through promises of government-controlled economic benefits.
The issue has also emerged outside New York. Earlier this month, democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Washington, D.C.
Trump has criticized George as a “communist” and said he would oppose her policy agenda if she takes office.
The president’s comments reflect his broader effort to frame the 2026 political debate around socialism, communism and the future direction of Democratic-led cities. Trump has said the spread of socialist candidates threatens traditional American economic and political values, while their supporters argue they are focused on housing costs, wages and public services.
The latest primary results in New York have intensified the national debate over the direction of the Democratic Party and the influence of its socialist wing.
