Gray skies and occasional drizzle did little to dampen spirits as thousands of visitors gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for the opening weekend of President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair, a centerpiece celebration marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The 16-day event, designed to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial, transformed several blocks of the National Mall into a showcase of American culture, history, food, and traditions. Visitors wandered through exhibits representing all 50 states, U.S. territories, and federal agencies while enjoying family-friendly attractions that remained busy despite the less-than-ideal weather.
For many attendees, the fair was less about politics and more about celebrating the country’s heritage and experiencing the diversity of America in one location.
Fair Highlights America’s Diverse Culture
The sprawling event features dozens of exhibition halls filled with displays highlighting each state’s unique history, cuisine, agriculture, tourism, and cultural traditions.
Visitors sampled regional foods, viewed historical exhibits, and interacted with representatives from government agencies and local organizations.
One of the fair’s biggest attractions is a towering Ferris wheel that rises above the National Mall, offering panoramic views of Washington’s monuments and museums.
Nearby stands a scaled-down model of a monumental arch that President Trump has proposed constructing permanently in the nation’s capital as part of a broader effort to reshape several iconic public spaces.
Families, tourists, and local residents spent the day exploring exhibits while sheltering from intermittent rain inside the temporary pavilions lining the Mall.
Part of Broader Vision for Washington
The state fair is one element of Trump’s broader initiative to leave a lasting mark on the nation’s capital ahead of America’s 250th birthday.
Among the administration’s proposed projects is the construction of a permanent ceremonial arch in Washington, along with renovations to several nationally recognized landmarks.
Other initiatives have included plans to repaint the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and efforts to further expand programming at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Some of those projects have faced legal and logistical challenges.
The proposal involving the Kennedy Center has been the subject of court proceedings, while renovations to the Reflecting Pool encountered technical problems, including algae growth and issues with deteriorating paint after portions of the pool were recolored.
Despite those controversies, organizers say the state fair is intended to serve as a nationwide celebration rather than a political event.
Visitors Describe Patriotic, Family-Friendly Atmosphere
Many attendees said they were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere, describing the fair as welcoming, educational, and largely free from overt political messaging.
Families from across the country said they came to experience exhibits representing states they had never visited and to celebrate the nation’s milestone anniversary.
Pamela, a visitor from Virginia Beach traveling with her husband during an annual birthday trip, said she appreciated the positive environment throughout the fairgrounds.
She noted that visitors appeared focused on enjoying the exhibits and interacting respectfully with one another rather than engaging in political discussions.
According to Pamela, the event offered her family an opportunity to experience different parts of America without traveling across the country.
She described the state exhibits as an enjoyable way to learn about places they had not yet visited.
Families Travel Long Distances to Attend
Nicole Briggs and Heather Hatter traveled from Virginia with their children specifically to attend the celebration.
They described the event as a unique experience unlikely to be repeated during their lifetimes.
Both said they found the atmosphere to be overwhelmingly patriotic rather than partisan.
As Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler appeared on a stage near one of the family attractions, Hatter said the event reflected pride in America’s history and accomplishments more than political affiliation.
Children crowded around petting zoos, interactive exhibits, and food vendors while live entertainment continued throughout the day.
Opening Ceremony Featured Patriotic Performances
The fair officially opened Thursday evening with a ceremony led by President Trump.
The event included military band performances, aerial flyovers by military aircraft, and a rendition of “God Bless the U.S.A.” performed by country singer Lee Greenwood.
In his remarks, Trump encouraged Americans to celebrate both the country’s history and its future.
He described the 250th anniversary as an opportunity not only to honor previous generations but also to inspire new ambitions for the nation’s next chapter.
The ceremony also featured remarks from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who commented on the withdrawal of several musical performers who had previously been scheduled to appear during the fair.
Entertainment Changes Sparked Earlier Debate
Weeks before the fair opened, several musical acts canceled their planned appearances, with some performers citing political concerns surrounding the event.
The withdrawals fueled public discussion over whether the celebration had become too closely associated with partisan politics.
Despite those controversies, many visitors said the event itself did not reflect the political divisions that had surrounded its planning.
Several attendees who had expected a heavily political atmosphere said they instead encountered a broad mix of tourists, families, and history enthusiasts simply enjoying the festivities.
Residents Say Event Felt Inclusive
Daniela Guerrero, a Washington-area resident, said she initially expected the gathering to resemble a political rally after hearing discussions within her community.
Instead, she found an atmosphere centered primarily on celebrating American history and culture.
Her friend Grace Guber shared that expectation before attending, saying both were surprised by how diverse the crowd appeared once they arrived.
According to Guerrero, the visitors represented a wide range of backgrounds and political viewpoints, with most focusing on the exhibits and entertainment rather than politics.
Freedom 250 Organizing National Celebrations
The Great American State Fair was organized by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership established by the Trump administration to coordinate events marking America’s 250th anniversary.
The organization is separate from America250, a congressionally created commission responsible for broader national anniversary planning.
In addition to the state fair, Freedom 250 is organizing several other major events throughout the year, including Sail 250, a FIFA World Cup FanFest, the annual Salute to America Independence Day fireworks celebration, and the Patriot Games scheduled for later this year.
Organizers say the series of events is intended to encourage civic pride and celebrate American history through public festivals and educational programming.
Some States Declined Participation
Not every state chose to participate in the fair.
Several states led by Democratic governors declined to send official delegations, with some citing financial considerations while others expressed concerns that the event had become increasingly political.
Among them was Oregon, whose governor’s office stated that concerns over both participation costs and the event’s perceived political direction influenced the state’s decision not to take part.
The absence of several state exhibits became another point of discussion among visitors.
Attendees Say National Celebrations Should Unite Americans
Some fairgoers expressed disappointment that politics had influenced participation decisions.
Lynn Frank, who traveled from North Carolina, said she believed events celebrating America’s history should remain above partisan disagreements.
She expressed regret that her state was not officially represented, arguing that national celebrations should focus on bringing Americans together regardless of political differences.
Similarly, Lloyd and Melinda Paris, who traveled from Georgia with their grandchildren while returning from a baseball tournament in New York, said their visit was motivated by a desire to experience the historic celebration rather than support any political cause.
While Lloyd Paris praised recent changes made in Washington, he emphasized that his family’s decision to attend was based on celebrating the country’s milestone anniversary.
His wife added that they would have attended regardless of which administration had organized the event, saying the celebration belonged to the nation rather than any political party.
As the Great American State Fair continues over the coming days, organizers hope it will remain a focal point of the nationwide observance of America’s 250th anniversary, bringing together visitors from across the country to celebrate the nation’s history, culture, and shared traditions.
