MONTICELLO – As Sullivan County continues to see a significant drop in sales tax, it is presenting very challenging 2027 budget preparation, County Manager Josh Potosek says.

He has me with commissioners, directors and department heads instructing them to tighten their spending belts next year.

Without the early planning and proposed spending cuts, Potosek said the county could face a 30 percent property tax increase.

The manager has asked them to submit budgets for their offices that are at or below the same county costs in the 2026 budget. That would exclude salaries and benefits that are set by employee union contracts.

“I also requested them to find ways to reduce costs by 10 percent via expense cuts, revenue enhancements or a combination of both,” the manager said.
