Tensions between Iran and the United States may be easing after reports indicated that both countries have agreed to temporarily halt military operations and resume diplomatic discussions following days of escalating conflict across the Middle East.
According to a report by Axios, citing a senior U.S. official, Washington and Tehran have agreed to pause further attacks and are expected to meet in Qatar on Tuesday in an effort to prevent the conflict from spiraling into a broader regional war.
The reported breakthrough comes after a series of military exchanges that saw the United States launch strikes against multiple targets in Tehran, while Iran responded with retaliatory attacks reportedly targeting U.S.-linked facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. The exchange marked one of the most serious confrontations between the two longtime adversaries in recent years.
Officials familiar with the discussions told Axios that the latest fighting stemmed from differing interpretations of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) previously signed by both countries. At the center of the disagreement is the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
One senior U.S. official reportedly told the outlet that Washington has “decided to stop all the kinetic activity,” signaling a willingness to de-escalate the military confrontation while diplomatic negotiations continue.
According to Breitbart News, one section of the reported memorandum states that the United States would begin removing its naval blockade and other restrictions affecting Iran immediately after the agreement’s signing. The document reportedly outlines a 30-day timeline for ending the blockade and reducing U.S. military forces operating near Iran, while allowing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to gradually return to pre-war levels.
Breitbart News also reported that Iran’s strikes on Bahrain and Kuwait came in response to U.S. airstrikes carried out against Iranian military targets. Earlier, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had conducted another round of strikes after Iran was accused of attacking a Panama-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf.
President Donald Trump addressed the latest military action in a post on Truth Social, stating that U.S. aircraft had targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar installations. Trump said the strikes were launched after Iran allegedly violated an existing ceasefire agreement.
In his statement, Trump warned that while the United States had shown restraint, continued violations could lead to a much stronger military response. He cautioned that if Iran continued its actions, Washington could be forced to significantly expand its military campaign against the Islamic Republic.
The reported agreement to suspend hostilities and hold talks in Qatar has raised cautious hopes that diplomacy could help reduce tensions. However, with both sides continuing to exchange accusations over ceasefire violations and the implementation of the reported memorandum, the situation remains fragile, and the outcome of the planned negotiations could prove critical for regional stability.
