A discussion on Friday night’s episode of HBO’s Real Time turned into a pointed debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as host Bill Maher challenged Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) over his comments about extremism on both sides of the conflict.
The exchange began when Warnock emphasized the shared humanity of Israelis and Palestinians, arguing that ordinary families on both sides desire peace and security rather than continued violence.
“I think, at the end of the day, Israeli mothers and Palestinian mothers want the same thing,” Warnock said. “They want to be able to put their children to bed at night, for them to be safe and to awaken in a world that embraces all of them. I think these extremes are not helpful. We’ve got to have honest conversations about all of this.”
Maher, however, quickly interrupted, saying he believed Warnock’s remarks created what he described as a “false equivalency.”
“I think that’s a false equivalency,” Maher said. “There’s a lot more extremism on one side.”
To support his argument, Maher pointed to the case of Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi, who he said received 74 lashes for performing without wearing a head scarf. Maher argued that the incident illustrated a significant difference between governments and societies in the region.
“Let’s not forget who the other side is,” Maher said. “Do you get 74 lashes for singing without a head scarf in Israel? No, you don’t. You just don’t. It’s simply not equivalent.”
Warnock responded by stressing that he does not believe the actions or views of the most extreme individuals should define entire populations.
“I don’t want to judge the Israeli people or the Palestinian people by the most extreme voices among them,” he said. “I think most people want peace.”
The Georgia senator noted that roughly seven million Israelis and seven million Palestinians live in the same region, making a peaceful resolution essential for both communities.
“It’s a very small area, and we’ve got to figure out a way that leads to a two-state solution where both communities can live in peace with each other,” Warnock said.
He also highlighted what he described as his consistent approach to the conflict, saying he has repeatedly condemned violence while supporting both Israel’s right to exist and the protection of Palestinian civilians.
“I’ve been very consistent,” Warnock said. “I’ve stood up for children in Gaza while also standing up for Israel’s right to exist and to live in peace with its neighbors. This idea that you’ve got to choose one or the other—that’s the false choice.”
Maher remained unconvinced, arguing that support for a two-state solution is not equally shared by both sides.
“It’s also not true that both sides want a two-state solution equally,” Maher said. “One side’s beginning negotiating position is, ‘You all die,’ and ‘from the river to the sea.’”
Warnock immediately responded by condemning that slogan and any rhetoric advocating violence.
“We have to condemn that idea, whoever’s saying it,” Warnock said. “We have to condemn it.”
Maher replied that, in his view, the slogan was being promoted by only one side in the conflict.
“Yeah, well, one side is saying it, not two sides,” Maher responded.
Earlier in the program, Maher had praised Warnock for remarks the senator previously made expressing support for Israel. The HBO host read portions of a statement in which Warnock echoed the views of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., affirming Israel’s right to exist while rejecting the characterization of Israel as an apartheid state.
The conversation reflected the ongoing debate in American politics over the Middle East conflict, with some leaders emphasizing the need to recognize the suffering experienced by civilians on both sides, while others argue that moral distinctions must be made when evaluating the actions and ideologies of governments and armed groups.
The exchange underscored the deep divisions surrounding U.S. policy in the region and highlighted the continuing national discussion over how best to pursue peace, security, and a lasting two-state solution amid decades of conflict.
