Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by fighting back to beat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Germany, who had already booked their place in the Round of 32, made a dream start when Leroy Sané found the net in just the second minute, giving the four-time world champions an early advantage. However, Ecuador refused to be rattled and responded almost immediately. Nilson Angulo curled home a superb equaliser in the ninth minute, ending his team’s long wait for a goal in the tournament.
The South American side continued to threaten throughout the match and completed their remarkable comeback in the 78th minute. Gonzalo Plata capitalised on a corner to score the decisive goal, sparking wild celebrations among Ecuador’s players and thousands of supporters inside the New York/New Jersey stadium.
Despite the defeat, Germany still finished top of Group E on goal difference and progressed to the knockout rounds. The loss, however, exposed defensive weaknesses, with Julian Nagelsmann’s team conceding in all three group-stage matches. The German coach said the performance offered valuable lessons ahead of the Round of 32.
Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece described the victory as the greatest World Cup win in his country’s history. He praised his players for maintaining belief after an opening defeat to Ivory Coast and a frustrating draw with Curaçao, while urging the team to stay humble as they prepare for the next stage.
The victory sends Ecuador into the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since 2006, marking a memorable chapter in the nation’s football history.
