U.S. online spending climbed to $8.3 billion Tuesday as Amazon’s Prime Day began, with shoppers increasing purchases across major retail websites despite a broader focus on essential goods, according to Adobe Analytics.

Adobe said spending on the first day of the four-day sales event rose 5.3% from the same period a year earlier across U.S. retailers. The firm said Tuesday’s total was running ahead of its expectations and marked the largest e-commerce day recorded so far in 2026.

Prime Day began Tuesday and is being held earlier than usual this year. The event is being watched as a gauge of consumer demand at a time when shoppers are weighing discretionary purchases against household necessities.

Adobe reaffirmed its projection that U.S. retailers will generate $26.3 billion in online spending during the full event.

The firm said Tuesday’s sales were led by categories including electronics, appliances, tools and home improvement. Purchases of everyday essentials also increased, suggesting shoppers used the promotional period to buy both larger-ticket items and routine household products.

Discounts are expected to remain in the same range seen on the first day, between 10% and 24%, Adobe said.

Adobe’s forecast is based on an analysis of 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail e-commerce sites. The data covers 100 million stock keeping units and 18 product categories.
