France confirmed Wednesday that a humanitarian doctor who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for Ebola, marking a European case linked to the outbreak spreading in the DRC.

The doctor was transferred to a specialized hospital after contracting the deadly disease, ABC News reported.

French health officials said the case was identified quickly and that precautions were put in place to prevent further spread in France. The patient had recently returned from the DRC, where U.N. officials have warned that the Ebola outbreak is spreading at an unprecedented rate.

“France has specialized capabilities for managing highly transmissible infectious diseases,” France’s Ministry of Health said in a statement.

Officials said an epidemiological investigation is underway to determine whether anyone else may have had contact with the infected doctor. Any identified contacts will be required to isolate at home for 21 days and will be monitored during that period.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said the risk to travelers and the general population in Europe remains low.

The case comes as health authorities continue responding to the DRC outbreak and tracking possible exposures connected to the infected humanitarian worker.
