NEW YORK – A 41-year-old Harriman man who was a New York City police officer has been sentenced to 8 ½ years in federal prison for conspiring to solicit and receive bribes, conspiring to distribute narcotics and possessing a firearm in connection with the conspiracy to distribute narcotics, in connection with his role as a cop.
Andrew Nguyen previously pled guilty in January and was sentenced on Monday in federal court.
It was alleged that Nguyen used his position as a police officer to solicit and accept tens of thousands of dollars in bribe payments in exchange for assisting another person with the operation of that individual’s drug trafficking enterprise.
Over the course of the three-year period in which he committed the crime, Nguyen accepted over $30,000 in bribe payments from the other person and solicited tens of thousands more in additional bribes.
In addition to the prison term, Nguyen was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
US Attorney Jay Clayton said in exchange for the bribes, Nguyen transported kilograms of drugs, provided armed protection, and used his police car and equipment to endanger the very community he took an oath to protect.
