The Chicago White Sox have welcomed back one of their promising young talents, activating catcher Kyle Teel from the 60-day injured list ahead of Monday’s series opener against the American League Central-leading Cleveland Guardians.
In a corresponding roster move, the club optioned catcher Edgar Quero to Triple-A Charlotte as it reshaped its catching corps for the remainder of the season.
Teel is expected to make his long-awaited season debut as the White Sox begin a pivotal three-game home series against Cleveland. His return comes after a lengthy recovery process that delayed the start of his 2026 campaign and forced the organization to remain patient with one of its top young players.
The 24-year-old endured a frustrating string of setbacks that kept him off the major league roster for months. His season was first interrupted when he suffered a strained right hamstring while representing Italy during the World Baseball Classic. As he worked toward returning, Teel encountered another obstacle after injuring his right knee during a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Charlotte, extending his absence even further.
Despite those challenges, Teel finished his second rehab assignment in impressive fashion. Over four games with the Charlotte Knights, he collected eight hits in 16 at-bats, blasted a home run, and drove in four runs, demonstrating that he had regained both his timing at the plate and his physical readiness for a return to the majors.
The White Sox are hopeful Teel can provide an immediate boost to both the lineup and the pitching staff. Widely regarded as one of the organization’s cornerstone prospects, he has been viewed as an important part of Chicago’s rebuilding efforts since arriving in the blockbuster trade that sent ace Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox in December 2024.
Originally selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Teel made a strong impression during his first major league season. He appeared in 78 games last year, batting .273 while hitting eight home runs and driving in 35 runs. His offensive consistency, defensive skills behind the plate, and ability to manage pitchers quickly established him as one of the team’s most promising young players.
Chicago enters the series against Cleveland looking to reverse its recent struggles after returning from a disappointing six-game road trip in which the club managed just one victory against five defeats. Despite the difficult stretch, the White Sox remained only one game behind the Guardians in the division standings entering the series, making the matchup especially significant in the race for the AL Central.
The decision to send Edgar Quero to Triple-A comes after a difficult start to his second major league season. The young catcher has struggled to find offensive consistency, batting .187 with two home runs and 15 RBIs across 55 games. While Quero has continued to show defensive potential, the White Sox believe regular playing time at Charlotte will give him an opportunity to regain confidence at the plate and continue his development.
Quero joined the White Sox organization in July 2023 as part of a trade with the Los Angeles Angels and remains an important piece of the club’s long-term plans. However, with Teel healthy and ready to return, Chicago opted to give its former first-round pick the opportunity to reclaim the starting catching role.
The White Sox will now look to Teel’s return to inject fresh energy into the lineup as they begin an important home stand against a division rival, hoping his presence can help spark a turnaround and strengthen the club’s pursuit of first place in the American League Central.
