A major fire tore through a luxury resort in the Dominican Republic, killing one tourist, injuring several others and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests, according to Dominican authorities.
The blaze struck the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, a coastal town on the southern side of Hispaniola that is popular with international travelers.
Authorities said the fire caused extensive damage to the property, leaving much of the resort devastated. Nearly 1,700 tourists were evacuated as emergency crews worked to contain the flames and move guests to safety.
One tourist died in the fire, officials said. Several others were injured and are receiving medical treatment.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officials said strong winds and the resort’s thatched roofs helped the flames “spread rapidly,” allowing the fire to move quickly across the property.
The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center said Saturday that the fire had been brought under control and that displaced resort guests had been moved to nearby hotels.
The resort is located in one of the Dominican Republic’s major tourism areas, where beachfront hotels draw visitors from around the world.
Authorities have not yet released additional details on the tourist who died or the number and condition of those injured.
Investigators are now working to determine how the fire started and how quickly it spread through the resort grounds.
