Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. is expected to return to Capitol Hill on June 30, marking the end of a nearly four-month absence from Washington during which he missed more than 100 votes in the House of Representatives.

Kean’s office confirmed the planned return date through his chief of staff, Dan Scharfenberger. The announcement follows months of limited public information about the New Jersey lawmaker’s condition and prolonged absence from legislative activity. The New Jersey Globe first reported the timeline.

Kean last cast a vote in the House on March 5 and has remained largely out of public view since then. While his office has continued posting updates on social media, the congressman himself has not appeared regularly at public events or in official proceedings during his recovery period.

Medical Absence Remains Undisclosed

Kean’s office previously described his time away from Congress as being due to a “personal medical issue,” but has not released additional details regarding his diagnosis or treatment.

The lack of public information has left questions among constituents and political observers, particularly given the length of his absence and the demands of a closely divided Congress where every vote can be significant.

Despite his time away, Kean has continued to maintain his re-election campaign efforts as he prepares for a competitive race in November.

Re-Election Campaign Continues Amid Absence

Kean is running for another term in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, where he will face Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot and healthcare executive.

Bennett’s background in both military service and healthcare has made her a prominent contender in what is expected to be one of the more closely watched House races in the state.

Even as Kean has remained away from Washington, his campaign operation has continued outreach efforts, and his political messaging has remained active online.

The congressman has also retained support from national Republican figures. President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Kean’s re-election campaign, emphasizing party unity ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

In a June 1 post on Truth Social, Trump said Kean was “working tirelessly” and issued what he described as his “complete and total endorsement” for the congressman’s re-election bid.

House Leadership Expresses Support

House Speaker Mike Johnson has also commented on Kean’s absence in recent months, framing it as a personal matter while expressing confidence in his return.

Johnson previously told reporters that he had spoken with Kean in April and emphasized that the congressman’s absence was related to a private medical issue. He noted that Kean intended to be transparent about his situation but stressed that medical privacy remained a priority.

“It’s a member’s personal privacy on whatever matters they’re dealing with,” Johnson said, while expressing optimism that Kean would soon return to legislative duties.

Last week, Johnson reiterated that he had encouraged Kean to provide clarity about his condition, while again avoiding discussion of specific details.

Missed Votes Raise Legislative and Political Questions

Kean’s extended absence has drawn attention because of the number of votes he has missed during a period of ongoing legislative activity in the House. Missing more than 100 votes over nearly four months places him among the more prolonged absences in recent congressional sessions.

In tightly contested votes, even a single absence can influence outcomes, adding further scrutiny to prolonged vacancies or medical leave among lawmakers.

However, colleagues from both parties have largely refrained from public criticism, instead emphasizing respect for his privacy and wishing him a full recovery.

Return Expected as Campaign Season Intensifies

Kean’s return comes as the 2026 election cycle begins to accelerate, with both parties focusing heavily on battleground districts like New Jersey’s 7th.

His reappearance in Washington will likely allow him to resume legislative duties while also re-engaging more directly with voters ahead of November’s general election.

Republicans view the seat as an important hold, while Democrats are aiming to capitalize on shifting suburban voter dynamics and competitive down-ballot races across New Jersey.

As Kean prepares to return to Congress, attention will remain on both his health and his political standing as one of the most closely watched Republican incumbents heading into the election season.
