NATO allies agreed on Thursday to advance the modernization of the alliance’s nuclear capabilities and reinforce its nuclear planning framework, according to a statement issued by its senior nuclear deterrence body following a meeting of defense ministers.

The decision reflects what alliance officials described as a continued effort to ensure that NATO’s nuclear posture remains credible, coordinated, and adaptable in response to evolving global security challenges. The Nuclear Planning Group, which serves as NATO’s principal forum for consultation and policy coordination on nuclear deterrence matters, reaffirmed the central role of the alliance’s strategic nuclear forces in safeguarding member states.

All NATO members except France participate in the Nuclear Planning Group, which provides a structured setting for discussions on nuclear policy, force posture, and deterrence strategy. The group is responsible for aligning allied perspectives on nuclear deterrence while maintaining cohesion across the alliance’s broader defense planning architecture.

In its statement, the group emphasized that the strategic nuclear forces of the alliance continue to represent what it described as the ultimate guarantee of collective security. Officials underscored that these capabilities remain a foundational element of NATO’s extended deterrence framework, which is designed to protect all member states under the alliance’s security commitments.

Defense ministers participating in the meeting reiterated that NATO’s nuclear deterrence structure remains central to its overall defense strategy. They highlighted the importance of maintaining a credible deterrent posture in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions and the need to preserve stability within the international security environment.

The ministers agreed on a set of priorities aimed at strengthening NATO’s nuclear mission. These include modernizing existing nuclear capabilities, enhancing the alliance’s planning capacity, and ensuring that its deterrence framework remains effective and responsive to changing strategic conditions. Officials said these measures are intended to support NATO’s long-term security interests and reinforce the reliability of its collective defense commitments.

The statement also noted that the alliance will continue adapting its nuclear posture as necessary to address emerging risks and maintain strategic stability. NATO officials stressed that these efforts are part of a broader process of continuous review and adjustment aimed at ensuring the effectiveness of deterrence in a complex global security landscape.
