NEWBURGH – Of the 129 street cameras monitoring the City of Newburgh’s streets, 16 percent of them, or 21, are not working, and 19 of those are not repairable. Of the total, city information technology director Camille Mohamed also told the city council that 108 do work.
The system runs on a combination of fiber, copper wiring and wireless radio communications, and it needs to be overhauled, Mohamed said.
“I guess it served its purpose, but the entire street network itself needs to be revised, the network on the street, and that will be the first task,” he said. “I do have an interim solution that can be done very, very quickly,” but he said it is not cheap.
This surveillance system should not be confused with the controversial Flock license plate reader system, Mohamed said.
He said he will include a proposal for a complete upgrading of the system I his 2027 budget proposal this coming fall.
