Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s recent agreement with Iran during an appearance Wednesday on CNN’s OutFront, arguing that the deal amounts to a major concession to Tehran and represents one of the most significant foreign policy failures in recent American history.

During the interview, host Erin Burnett referenced comments made by Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who reportedly described the situation as “the worst foreign policy blunder in decades.” Burnett asked Murphy whether he agreed with that assessment.

Murphy responded by saying that the broader conflict itself, as well as the resulting agreement, should be viewed as a serious strategic mistake. According to the Connecticut Democrat, the deal demonstrates that the military confrontation failed to achieve any meaningful objectives for the United States while ultimately benefiting Iran.

“Well, he’s right in that this entire war is the worst foreign policy blunder of the last 20 years,” Murphy said. He argued that the agreement offers Iran substantial economic relief while requiring little in return. Murphy characterized the arrangement as a “multi-billion-dollar payoff” that provides Tehran with significant advantages without securing new commitments from the Iranian government.

The senator pointed out that Iran had already stated it was not seeking a nuclear weapon and had previously expressed a willingness to participate in nuclear negotiations before the conflict escalated. He also noted that the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz was not, in his view, a meaningful concession because the waterway had been open before the war began.

Murphy contended that the central outcome of the agreement appears to be the lifting of oil-related sanctions on Iran, while Tehran is not being required to take additional actions beyond positions it had already indicated it was prepared to accept. As a result, he argued that the United States gained little from the conflict despite the costs and risks associated with military involvement.

“The agreement is basically just that we lift oil sanctions and Iran does nothing,” Murphy said. “That’s it. That’s a humiliation.”

Although Murphy emphasized that he supports efforts to bring the conflict to an end and favors avoiding a prolonged war, he argued that the final terms demonstrate that the United States did not achieve its intended goals. In his assessment, the outcome ultimately strengthened Iran’s position while weakening America’s standing on the world stage.

Murphy concluded his remarks with a blunt political assessment, claiming that the agreement serves as proof that the conflict failed to deliver results for the United States. “Iran won, Trump surrendered,” he said, arguing that the deal reflects a clear victory for Tehran and a setback for the Trump administration’s foreign policy strategy.

The comments highlight the continuing debate in Washington over U.S. policy toward Iran, with lawmakers from both parties weighing the costs of military engagement, sanctions policy, and diplomatic negotiations. While supporters of the agreement argue it could help reduce tensions and prevent further escalation in the region, critics such as Murphy maintain that it rewards Iran without securing significant new concessions in return.
