California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that he and his wife are under investigation by the Department of Justice, accusing President Donald Trump of using federal law enforcement against him because he may run for president in 2028.

Newsom made the allegation in a public statement and video post, saying federal authorities had begun seeking information from people connected to his family and past work.

“Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime – they are simply trying to find one,” Newsom wrote. “He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President. He hates that I consistently call him out. He is simply the most corrupt President in American history.”

Newsom said he and his wife have done nothing wrong and vowed not to retreat from public life.

“We have nothing to hide. Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere. The country is watching,” Newsom added.

In the video, Newsom said federal agents had contacted people tied to him personally and professionally as part of the inquiry.

“Federal agents have knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees,” the governor said. “They’re demanding records, they’re abusing the grand jury process.”

The details of the reported DOJ investigation, including its subject matter and whether prosecutors are examining specific allegations, were not provided in the submitted information. It was also not stated whether Newsom, his wife or anyone else has been accused of a crime.

Newsom framed the investigation as political retaliation and tied it to his possible 2028 presidential ambitions. The California Democrat has frequently criticized Trump and has been widely discussed as a potential future national candidate.

The dispute also comes after years of legal battles involving Trump. The Biden administration and Democratic prosecutors pursued multiple cases against him before his return to office, including the 2023 Manhattan case brought by District Attorney Alvin Bragg involving alleged hush money payments. Trump was indicted in that case on 34 felony counts.

That same year, Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis brought an election-related case against Trump after a special purpose grand jury examined allegations of interference in the 2020 election.

Special Counsel Jack Smith also brought two federal cases against Trump, one related to classified documents at Mar-a-Lago in Florida and another involving allegations of conspiracy to defraud or obstruct the 2020 election tied to Jan. 6.

The Georgia case and both Jack Smith cases were later dismissed, according to the information provided. Trump was convicted in the Bragg case, and Judge Juan Merchan imposed an unconditional discharge on all counts, leaving Trump with a felony conviction but no jail time, fines, probation or other penalties.

Newsom’s comments suggest he views the reported investigation as part of a broader pattern of political use of the justice system, though the outcome of any DOJ inquiry remains unknown.

It remains to be seen whether investigators will identify any criminal conduct involving Newsom or his wife, or whether the matter will end without charges.
