The Carolina Hurricanes claimed their first Stanley Cup championship in two decades on Sunday night, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 to secure the title and complete a remarkable turnaround in the series.
Carolina closed out the championship by winning three consecutive games after trailing earlier in the final. The Hurricanes relied on a dominant defensive performance, limiting Vegas’ scoring opportunities and frustrating an offense that had powered the Golden Knights through an unlikely playoff run.
Goaltender Brandon Bussi delivered the standout performance of the night, recording his first career playoff shutout with 22 saves. Bussi’s emergence after entering late in Game 3 proved to be a pivotal moment in the series, helping shift momentum firmly in Carolina’s favor.
Taylor Hall opened the scoring just 3:47 into the contest, setting the tone for the Hurricanes. Jackson Blake added a goal and an assist, while Nikolaj Ehlers sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the closing minutes.
Vegas struggled to generate offense throughout the game and endured a stretch of more than 18 minutes between shots on goal spanning the second and third periods. The Golden Knights, appearing in their third Stanley Cup Final, were shut out in a championship series game for the first time.
The triumph marks another milestone for Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour, who also captained Carolina’s 2006 Stanley Cup-winning team. Under his leadership, the franchise completed a memorable postseason run and lifted hockey’s most prestigious trophy once again.
Despite a strong effort from Vegas goaltender Carter Hart, who made 20 saves, the Golden Knights could not overcome Carolina’s relentless pressure and disciplined defensive play as the Hurricanes celebrated a long-awaited championship.
