President Donald Trump said Thursday that he canceled planned evening strikes against Iran after negotiations over a potential deal advanced to Iran’s highest leadership and appeared close to completion.
Trump announced the decision in a Truth Social post on June 11, after earlier warning that Iran would be hit later that night.
“Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening,” Trump wrote.
The announcement marked a sudden shift after days of escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and repeated warnings from Trump that additional strikes were imminent.
Trump said the agreement under discussion had been approved in both broad terms and detailed provisions by the United States and several regional and international partners.
“Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others,” Trump wrote.
The president said the U.S. naval blockade would remain in place until the deal is finalized.
“The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly,” he added.
Trump’s statement came after he had threatened earlier in the day to strike Iran “very hard” and said the United States could target Iranian oil infrastructure, including Kharg Island. The administration has been pressing Tehran to accept an agreement that would end the conflict and address Iran’s nuclear program.
The president did not provide details about the terms of the proposed agreement or say when a signing could occur.
The cancellation of the strikes suggests negotiations have reached a sensitive final stage, even as U.S. military pressure remains in place through the naval blockade.
The White House has argued that pressure on Iran is necessary to force Tehran back to serious negotiations. Trump’s latest statement indicates the administration now believes those talks may be nearing a breakthrough.
