BREWSTER- Fire caused by a malfunctioning ceiling fan damaged a century-old residence on Sodom Road in Brewster, resulting in the displacement of several residents and dogs.
The blaze broke out around 7 p.m. at the SNARR Northeast shelter—a non-profit rescue treating special needs animals suffering from disabilities, injuries, and serious medical conditions.
A 9-1-1 call alerted the Brewster FD, however, prior to their arrival, Carmel firefighters were returning from an alarm in their district and crews at once responded to the neighboring district where they found flames shooting from a second story window.
Mutual aid came from the Lake Carmel, Croton Falls, and Putnam Lake fire departments, as well as the Brewster Rescue Squad, North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services, and the Putnam Fire Investigation Team.
Fire officials said the quick, coordinated response brought the blaze under control and contained it to the room where it started, preventing it from spreading through the building.
The American Red Cross aided displaced residents with temporary housing and support services.
No residents, emergency responders, or animals were injured in the fire.
Also assisting were members of the Putnam Sheriff’s Department, Brewster Village Police, Brewster State Police, and the Putnam County SPCA Police.
