Graham Platner has emerged as the projected winner of Maine’s Democrat Senate primary, securing the party’s nomination and advancing to a high-stakes general election battle against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins this November.
The race was officially called for Platner by the Associated Press on Tuesday evening, although election officials are expected to continue counting ballots over the coming days before final vote totals and victory margins are confirmed.
Addressing supporters during his victory speech in Blue Hill, Maine, Platner acknowledged both the challenges and controversies that have followed his campaign while emphasizing his belief in personal growth and redemption.
“If you believe, as I do, that we can change our politics and change our country, then you must also believe that people can change,” Platner told supporters. “And the reason I believe that is because I have lived it.”
Platner’s primary victory comes amid intense scrutiny surrounding his personal history and a series of allegations that surfaced just days before voters cast their ballots. Several women who previously dated the Democratic nominee spoke publicly about what they described as troubling and unsettling behavior during their past relationships with him.
A recent report published by The New York Times featured interviews with multiple former romantic partners who detailed experiences they described as concerning. The allegations add to a growing list of controversies that have surrounded Platner’s campaign, including ongoing questions about a Nazi-related tattoo that has generated significant public debate throughout the election season.
Among those interviewed was conservative commentator Lyndsey Fifield, who said she dated Platner between 2013 and 2015. While she stated that he never physically assaulted her, she alleged that he frequently made disturbing comments involving violence and aggression.
According to Fifield, Platner would sometimes make alarming statements during conversations, including comments about how he would respond if someone broke into his home. She described these remarks as deeply unsettling and said they left a lasting impression on her.
Fifield also recounted an incident in which she claimed an argument escalated to the point where Platner allegedly twisted her arm behind her back, pushed her into a bedroom, and held the door shut from the outside, instructing her to remain there until she had calmed down. The allegations have not resulted in criminal charges, but they have intensified public discussion about Platner’s character and fitness for office.
Questions surrounding Platner’s controversial tattoo have also resurfaced in recent weeks. Critics have challenged his previous explanations regarding the symbol and whether he fully understood its historical significance when he obtained it. Fifield expressed skepticism about Platner’s assertion that he was unaware of its meaning, claiming that he occasionally referred to the tattoo using the term “Totenkopf,” a symbol historically associated with Nazi Germany. Similar claims have reportedly been made by former acquaintances who knew Platner during earlier periods of his life.
Additional former partners have also come forward with concerns about his behavior. At least two women alleged that Platner exhibited patterns of excessive alcohol consumption and womanizing during their relationships with him. Among them was Maine Democrat Jenny Raciot, who dated Platner from 2019 to 2021. She described his conduct during that period as both “reckless” and “unsettling,” raising further questions about the candidate as he prepares for a statewide general election campaign.
Despite the growing controversy, Platner’s victory in the Democratic primary suggests that many voters remained focused on his political message and policy positions rather than the allegations surrounding his personal life. His supporters argue that he has been transparent about mistakes from his past and has demonstrated personal growth over time.
The coming months are expected to bring increased scrutiny as Platner faces Collins in what could become one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country. Republicans are likely to highlight the controversies as they seek to defend Collins’ seat, while Democrats will attempt to unite behind their nominee and focus attention on key issues facing Maine voters.
With the primary now decided, the battle for Maine’s Senate seat enters a new phase—one that will test whether Platner can overcome mounting questions about his past while convincing voters that he is the right choice to represent them in Washington.
