Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford secured the Democratic nomination for governor on Tuesday, setting the stage for a closely watched general election battle against incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in one of the nation’s most competitive gubernatorial races.

Ford defeated his Democratic primary opponent with roughly two-thirds of the vote, while Lombardo easily won the Republican nomination over lesser-known challengers. The outcome formalizes a contest that political observers have anticipated for months in the perennial swing state.

Lombardo, a former Clark County sheriff, won the governor’s office in 2022 by less than two percentage points, making him a top target for Democrats seeking to regain the seat. Nevada is the only state among the Cook Political Report’s gubernatorial “toss-up” races where a Republican governor is seeking re-election.

Ford, a former Nevada Senate Democratic leader, is also aiming to become the state’s first Black governor. His campaign has sought to link Lombardo to President Donald Trump, arguing that Trump’s policies on tariffs, immigration, healthcare and the economy have hurt Nevada residents.

Democrats believe economic concerns will be central to the race, pointing to rising costs, Medicaid cuts and high gasoline prices. Ford campaign manager Zoë Kleinfeld accused Lombardo of backing policies that have increased financial pressure on working families.

Lombardo, meanwhile, is emphasizing job creation, economic investment and housing initiatives enacted during his first term. Following his primary victory, he acknowledged ongoing challenges facing Nevada families while pledging to continue efforts to expand economic opportunities and address rising costs.

The governor also enters the general election with significant fundraising and advertising advantages. However, Democrats remain optimistic that an economy-focused message and outreach to Latino voters could help them reclaim the governorship in November’s closely contested election.
