A majority of Democrats surveyed said they would rather live in another country than the United States, according to an Elon University/YouGov poll released as Democratic voters continue showing increased openness to socialism and far-left candidates.

The America 250 National Survey, conducted by Elon University and YouGov from April 30 to May 4, asked respondents, “Is there any other country on Earth you would rather live in than the United States today?”

Fifty-five percent of Democrats answered yes.

The same response was given by 38 percent of independents and 10 percent of Republicans, according to the survey. The results were also highlighted in a social media post that circulated the partisan breakdown.

The poll surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults through an online, web-based survey and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 3.95 percentage points.

The findings come amid broader polling showing that many Democratic voters have grown more favorable toward socialism. A 2025 poll found that a majority of Democratic voters aligned more closely with socialism than capitalism and supported far-left candidates.

“Unsurprisingly, the survey found that socialism is largely toxic to Republicans and many independents, explaining why far-left Democrats have had more success in places like New York City but have struggled in red and battleground areas. The poll also found that a plurality of independent voters and Republicans prefer capitalism,” the outlet reported.

A later poll showed that a majority of Democrats held a favorable view of socialism. That trend drew additional attention after New York City elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is Muslim and openly socialist.

President Donald Trump responded to those results by framing the political stakes in stark terms.

“After last night’s results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear. We have a choice between communism and common sense,” Trump said.

The new polling also comes as Democrats face warning signs ahead of the midterm elections. Recent polling from CNN showed Democrats sliding as voters appear to be leaning away from the party.

In April, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, described the Republican message for the midterms as straightforward.

“I think this election actually comes down … to two sentences, and those sentences are ‘They’re crazy. We’re not.’ And I think we have to highlight that for the American people,” Jordan said.

The Elon University/YouGov findings add another data point to the national debate over patriotism, political identity and the ideological direction of the Democratic Party. While only one in 10 Republicans said they would rather live outside the United States, more than half of Democrats gave that answer, underscoring a sharp partisan divide over how voters view life in America today.
