A thermal image reported near Area 51 has prompted renewed speculation about a possible next-generation stealth aircraft, including theories tied to the Air Force’s NGAD program and F-47 fighter.

A newly circulated thermal image reportedly captured near Area 51 has renewed speculation about whether an undisclosed next-generation military aircraft was seen operating near the heavily restricted Nevada test site.
The military aviation and defense news blog The Aviationist, which has tracked unusual aircraft activity around U.S. restricted airspace for years, highlighted the image and said it may show a previously unseen stealth aircraft design. The aircraft in the image has drawn attention because of what observers described as cranked-kite wings and canards, features that have fueled theories about a possible sixth-generation fighter.
“Had to update this composite image with the latest mysterious aircraft. We have reported on all of them over the years, starting 12 years ago with the Amarillo and Wichita sightings, then the January 2026 image by Uncanny Expeditions, and now the most recent one by Project Fear,” The Aviationist wrote on X in the post.
The latest image was attributed to the Project Fear YouTube channel, which shared the footage earlier in the week. A video titled “We Filmed a Top Secret Craft Flying at Area 51” showed the reported capture and added to online discussion about what may have been recorded.
The Aviationist said it contacted Project Fear for comment about the image and received a response describing the circumstances behind the footage.
“Here’s what I can say on it: This was an amazing capture! I met up with the team who recorded this to show them some potential spotting locations around the Area 51 perimeter after introducing them to the gear I often use for night sky monitoring – in this case thermal imaging cameras. We did not see anything particularly noteworthy that week, but a few days later, I get a call asking if I can take a look at something they’d captured on the thermal imager. As soon as they sent the footage over, I knew we were looking at something very interesting that has not been captured before.”
The image has prompted a wave of theories on X and in aviation circles about whether the aircraft could be connected to the U.S. Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance program, known as NGAD, or the F-47 sixth-generation fighter. No official confirmation was provided in the submitted material identifying the aircraft or linking it to either program.
At the beginning of his second term, President Donald Trump announced that the F-47 program would proceed, with Boeing awarded a contract valued at more than $20 billion. That announcement has intensified interest in any unusual aircraft activity near U.S. test ranges, particularly around Area 51, which has long been associated with classified military aviation programs.
The reported thermal capture has not been publicly verified as a sixth-generation aircraft. Still, its appearance, location and timing have made it a focus of discussion among aviation observers who follow possible stealth aircraft development and black-budget programs.
The latest sighting adds to a series of unusual aircraft reports tracked over more than a decade, including earlier sightings near Amarillo and Wichita, a January 2026 image by Uncanny Expeditions and the new Project Fear footage. The Aviationist’s updated composite placed the latest image alongside those earlier cases, framing it as another entry in a long-running pattern of unexplained aircraft observations near restricted U.S. airspace.
Speculation about the image remains unconfirmed, but the discussion underscores continuing public interest in classified aviation development, the NGAD program and whether the F-47 or related technologies may already be undergoing testing.
