CARMEL- In a unanimous vote, the Putnam Legislature approved renaming the former Nelsonville Fire Department headquarters, now used by the Sheriff’s Department as its western Putnam County post, the Putnam Sheriff’s Department Kevin McConville Substation.
Putnam’s late sheriff, who was remembered as a man who devoted his life to serving others with compassion, courage and integrity, died last summer at the age of 68 following a lengthy illness.
McConville was a lifelong resident of Cold Spring. He and his wife Janice lived in the home he grew up in to raise their three children.
The lawmakers noted, “Kevin’s generational ties to Cold Spring ignited his determination to contribute to the place he loved and respected. Serving as sheriff gave him the opportunity to apply his comprehensive background and expertise in law enforcement within the county he cared for so dearly.”
McConville spent more than 30 years with the MTA Police and retired as chief. After being elected sheriff, he emphasized teamwork and built partnerships with other law enforcement agencies to enhance safety and protect Putnam County residents.
Plans call for the official re-naming during a ceremony on August 22, the first anniversary of his passing.
