Romanian authorities issued urgent security warnings today after multiple maritime drones exploded in and around the Black Sea port of Constanța, intensifying concerns about the spillover of the Russia–Ukraine conflict into NATO territory. The incident prompted large‑scale evacuations along the coast and immediate military response operations.
The Romanian Ministry of National Defence confirmed that the first explosion occurred late morning when an unmanned surface vessel detonated near berth infrastructure inside the port perimeter. No casualties were reported, but the blast damaged an industrial hall and several shipping containers, sending smoke across the harbour and forcing port workers to evacuate.
Officials stated that additional drones were detected in the surrounding waters, with at least one more exploding on the Ukrainian side of the Black Sea. Emergency teams, naval units, and military helicopters were deployed to secure the coastline and search for further devices.
Ukrainian naval authorities later said the drone involved in the Constanța explosion was one of their maritime vessels that had lost navigational control after being disrupted by Russian electronic warfare systems. According to Kyiv, the drone drifted toward Romanian waters, and Ukrainian officials notified Bucharest in advance to minimise risk to civilians.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan described the event as part of a pattern of escalating security incidents along the country’s eastern frontier. Earlier this week, a maritime mine was discovered off the coast, and a separate Russian drone crash injured civilians in the city of Galați. Dan stated that these incidents are “direct consequences of Russia’s ongoing aggression” and emphasised the need for heightened vigilance across NATO’s Black Sea region.
European leaders reacted swiftly. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the incident and warned that the increasing frequency of drone and missile spillovers poses a growing threat to member states bordering the conflict zone. NATO officials confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely and are in direct coordination with Romanian defence authorities.
Romania has faced repeated airspace and maritime intrusions since the start of the war in 2022, with debris from Russian drones previously landing on Romanian soil. The Black Sea remains a critical corridor for grain exports, energy routes, and military logistics, making it one of the most strategically sensitive regions in Europe.
Investigations into today’s explosions are ongoing. Defence analysts are examining the drones’ origins, flight paths, and the extent to which electronic warfare interference contributed to the incident. Romanian authorities have pledged to maintain elevated security measures across coastal infrastructure as the situation develops.
