Several employees of German airline Lufthansa were injured on Thursday after the nose landing gear of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner unexpectedly retracted while the aircraft was parked at a gate at Frankfurt Airport, prompting an immediate emergency response and an investigation into the cause of the incident.
The aircraft was preparing for a scheduled long-haul flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles when the accident occurred shortly after noon local time. According to Lufthansa, no passengers had boarded the aircraft at the time, and only crew members and ground personnel were present during pre-departure operations.
The sudden retraction of the nose gear caused the front section of the aircraft to drop unexpectedly while it was stationary at the gate. The incident resulted in injuries to several airline employees working in and around the aircraft.
Lufthansa confirmed that the injured workers received medical attention following the accident. The airline did not immediately disclose the exact number of people hurt or provide details regarding the severity of their injuries. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist those affected and secure the area around the aircraft.
In a statement, the airline said the injured employees were being treated and supported while the company focused on determining exactly what led to the unusual equipment failure.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner involved in the incident had been scheduled to operate a transatlantic service connecting Germany’s busiest airport with Los Angeles, one of Lufthansa’s key destinations in the United States.
The aircraft was undergoing routine preparations before departure when the nose gear unexpectedly collapsed or retracted, an event that is considered highly unusual while an aircraft is parked at a gate.
Aviation experts note that commercial aircraft landing gear systems are designed with multiple safeguards intended to prevent accidental retraction while on the ground. Any unexpected movement of the gear typically triggers a detailed technical investigation to determine whether mechanical failure, maintenance issues, human error, or other factors contributed to the event.
Following the incident, airport personnel secured the aircraft and suspended preparations for the scheduled flight. Passengers booked on the service were expected to face delays or alternative travel arrangements while Lufthansa assessed the situation and removed the aircraft from service.
The airline said it is working closely with relevant aviation authorities and technical specialists to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident. Investigators are expected to inspect the aircraft’s landing gear system, maintenance records, and operational procedures in an effort to identify what caused the malfunction.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is one of the world’s most widely used long-haul aircraft and serves routes across Europe, North America, Asia, and other regions. The aircraft has become a key part of Lufthansa’s long-distance fleet, operating numerous international services from Frankfurt and other major hubs.
Thursday’s incident is likely to draw close attention from aviation regulators because of the injuries sustained by ground personnel and the unusual nature of the event. Investigators will seek to determine whether the problem was isolated to a single aircraft or if broader safety concerns need to be addressed.
Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs, continued normal operations following the accident, though activity around the affected gate was temporarily restricted while emergency crews and technical teams carried out their work.
Lufthansa stated that it remains focused on supporting the injured employees and fully cooperating with authorities as the investigation proceeds. The airline added that further information would be released once more details become available regarding the cause of the nose gear failure and the condition of those injured.
