STEWART AIRPORT – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is assembling a public-private partnership to attract airline service to New York Stewart International Airport. Since commercial service began in April 1990, the Newburgh airport has had its ups and downs with airlines.
With only Allegiant and Breeze Airways servicing the airport, primarily to Florida, the new push will include the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation headed up by its President, Michael Oates.
“We are in the process of pulling together a minimum revenue guarantee program, which is a tool that regional airports throughout the country use to help airlines that they kind of ramp up their operations to kind of guarantee them a minimum revenue during the early stages of operation,” he said.
The effects of 9/11 and Covid-19 as well as airline consolidations and financial issues resulted over the years with legacy airlines including American, Delta, United, US Airways, withdrawing from the market, and startups like Midway and Independence Air folding up shop all together.
