Pauline Hanson’s One Nation has moved ahead of Australia’s ruling Labor Party in a national opinion poll, marking the first time the populist party has led the country’s major parties in the survey.
One Nation’s primary vote rose 4 percentage points to 31%, while the center-left Labor government fell 3 points to 28%, according to a Redbridge Group/Accent Research survey cited by Bloomberg. The poll was conducted from May 25 to May 28 among 1,005 voters and had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
The result comes after Australia’s May 12 budget and amid political fallout over the government’s broken budget promises. The shift places One Nation ahead of Labor in primary vote support and signals growing pressure on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government.
Sky News reported that One Nation has become the country’s most popular political party as Labor falls to an all-time low.
“One Nation has become the most popular political party in the country as Labor tanks to an all-time low amid ongoing fallout over the government’s broken budget promises,” Sky News reported.
The polling also found that One Nation is making major inroads with voters who have historically formed part of Labor’s electoral base. According to Sky News, 35% of working-class voters said they intended to vote for Hanson’s party.
“YouGov’s Director of Public Data Paul Smith said. ‘Working class voters are the majority of voters in most electorates, so the battle for the working class vote between Labor and One Nation will decide the next election’,” Sky News reported.
The surge reflects a major realignment in Australian politics, with One Nation gaining support among voters dissatisfied with the governing party’s economic record and budget performance.
The poll results were also circulated through social media posts, along with additional posts highlighting the survey and working-class voting trends.
The survey positions One Nation as a serious national challenger to Labor, with working-class voters emerging as the key bloc that could shape Australia’s next election.
