President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday calling on artificial intelligence companies to allow voluntary government review of new models before releasing them to the public.
The order was signed privately, without the usual livestream or public ceremony. It asks AI developers to submit new products for review 30 days before public launch, according to Politico.
The final version is narrower than an earlier draft that would have requested a 90-day review period before release. Trump had been expected to sign the order May 21 but rejected the original version before approving the revised approach.
The order does not impose mandatory pre-release approval. Instead, it encourages companies to participate voluntarily as the administration weighs how to oversee increasingly powerful AI models without adopting the more restrictive framework considered in the earlier draft.
The signing comes as artificial intelligence faces growing public and government scrutiny. Concerns have increased over the rapid development of new models, their widespread use and the expansion of data centers needed to support the technology.
The order also arrives after the 2024 Trump campaign received substantial support from the technology sector, including fundraising help from Silicon Valley figures.
By choosing a voluntary 30-day review process, the administration adopted a more limited oversight measure than the one initially under consideration, while still signaling that federal officials want greater visibility into major AI systems before they reach the public.
