SOUTHEAST – Traffic was snarled for hours on I-84 in Putnam County Monday after two trash-hauling tractor-trailers collided and overturned near the I-684 interchange in Southeast.
The crash took place in the westbound lanes around 12-noon, however debris from the big rigs spilled into the eastbound lanes blocking traffic as well.
Westbound traffic on I-84 backed up to the Connecticut state line, eastbound traffic stalled to the Route 312 interchange, and northbound traffic on I-684 was also delayed as drivers tried to enter I-84.
Traffic impacted the evening rush hour Monday since vehicles were crawling along the interstate from Danbury to Carmel while impacting local roads in greater Southeast resulting from the debris scattered along the highway. A normal 15-minute trip took more than an hour.
Trooper Krystal Paolicelli, State Police Troop K Public Information Officer, said both truck drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment.
Brewster and Croton Falls firefighters aided at the scene along with the Brewster EMS squad, Brewster Fire Police, Putnam Sheriff’s Department personnel and Putnam paramedics.
